Don't Forget the Back Don't Forget the Back
Save Tip

The thing that is missing from most people's workouts is balance. Most workouts consist of chest, chest, and more chest. It's great that you may want to build your chest, but there may be some consequences to this type of workout. Asthetically, you should actually work the upper back just as much, if not more. I know we aren't tightening the chest this way, but if you strengthen the upper back, it will pull the shoulders back a bit and make the chest look suprisingly bigger. Also, it's much healthier to keep the back strong rather than let the chest take over. Think about your posture...Just by working the upper back, you can improve your daily posture which will decrease the risk for back pains in the future, and help improve the strength of the shoulder girdle thus decreasing the risk of shoulder injuries. Just a thought.

MleighS84 I absolutley love a sculpted back - plus you need to work the back in order maintain a healthy posture - plus I have always heard you can't have great abs unless you have a great back!!! and for the ladies a well-defined back really helps support your chest and does help with the "gravity effect" on your chest.

Hulbs Totally agree. The amount of guys you see in the gym with large chests and hunched shoulders says it all! Unlike most people who seem to separate working chest and back into separate workout days, I work chest and back in the one workout. I work chest first and finish with back to help with my posture as they balance each other out. I nice V is also a good bonus and a ripped back looks awesome even on a quite skinny guy like me!

jda2387 Good advice, over-training the chest is a great way to set yourself up for a rotator cuff injury by throwing off the balance between internal and external rotators.
