Eat your veggies Eat your veggies
Save Tip

I can’t tell you many times I remember hearing my mother assert with unwavering authority, "You’re not leaving the dinner table until you eat those veggies, mister." Actually now that I think of it, it was a whole bunch of times; like the same bad dream happening over and over again in a loop from one night to the next. And I'd be willing to bet some of you – in fact a whole lot of you - can recall hearing these exact words from your mother a time or two in your younger years?

Geez mom, why on earth would I want to eat this crap?

Well… chalk a few points up for mother dearest because, yet again, mama knows best! And in a quick and dirty summary, here's why -

Most vegetables are high in water and dietary fibre, but comparatively low in calories. What this means is that you can eat a whole bunch to satisfy your hunger without the negative health and waistline effects often associated with calorie dense foods.

What’s more, just like fruit, they're also fantastic sources of vitamins, minerals and disease-fighting phytonutrients.

Phyto whatcha’ macallit? Just what the heck is that or those???

Well, they're a member of a wide range of nutrients found in fruits and vegetables that are key to our optimal health and wellness. In the world of human physiology, these little helpers of heath are super active. To get a visual, think of those commercials for household cleaners where the little bubbles turn into animated scrubbers; or the “sludge neutralizing dispersants” to use a Castrol commercial. In the world of animations, and visualizations, that’s exactly how these phytonutrients help protect you.

In nutritionist speak, these plant-made nutrients have a cancer risk reducing, free radical scavenging, energy processing, anti-inflammatory, health promoting effect.

So seriously, unless you want clogged arteries and painful joints, next time you’re sitting down to eat, remember what 'mama' said and get those veggies into ya!

Jweave luke... This was a really helpful tip. I like how you obviously know a lot of scientific information about health and fitness, but then explain it in terms for people who don't know much about nutrition. :)
