runningbear I just worked out with my son the other day so he could observe me and correct bad form and cheats. It's easy to slip into bad habits, especially on days when you're feeling tired, rushed, or simply unmotivated, and we all have days like that.

davegleason Agreed. The average Joe/Jane needs variations in technique, including "cheating" as well. :-)

OldeButGoode Arnold Schwarzennegger was famous for his cheating curls using an arm blaster, etc. and I know other bodybuilders who use the same method my point was more to the "average Joe/Jane" using correct form.

davegleason This could be a great debate. There are times to cheat and times not to. Depends on A LOT of variables. Life doesn't happen at any one speed, range of motion, etc. Super slow, isometrics, fast (but under control)...its all good. Again it depends on many things - goals, prior injury, exercise, forced reps, on and on.

I'm interested in more comments. Great post.

OldeButGoode Yes, in the end they are only "cheating themselves" from a more beneficial workout.

ryan Great tip... many people cheat, but since it's not obvious cheating (i.e. swinging your body on hammer curls) they don't realize it. Almost everyone in the gym is doing things like shortening the range of movement. Since they don't do it drastically, they don't even realize.
