How to stay fit while camping
General/Other
"Camping is a terrific way to spend time appreciating the great outdoors. Not only is it a terrific family vacation, its a great way to get fit while reconnecting with nature. However; if you are like me, Camping also means frosty cocktails and yes......BBQ everything! Here's how to stay fit and still enjoy the odd treat around the campfire...

Things to do while camping:
*Hike/run the nature trails - A good hike can burn over 500 calories an hour - The higher the incline the better:)
*Swim - Hit the water everyday for a terrific full body workout. Integrate "water running", front crawls, breast strokes and even crunches on your back. Or just spend an hour throwing around the football/frisbee in the water ( ask your partner to make you work for it!)
* Bike - I live in the city, so its always a treat to hit the off-road trails on my mountain bike. After a good rain, the trails can get really muddy and super fun. Don't forget to wear a helmet - You will definitely need a swim after this!
* Kayak - I'm a big fan of exploring Canada's beautiful lakes via Kayak. A great excercise for your core, back and shoulders.

What to eat:
When camping, its very important to limit the amount of packaged foods as much as you can. This reduces waste and is obviously more eco-friendly. Here are some good healthy snacks for the beach and the campfire...

*Fruits and veggies are portable, refreshing and easy to eat and share. Berries and cucumbers are amazing after a good hike
*Homemade trail mix: Mix some dried fruit, nuts and seeds for an energy boost on the trails, in the water or at the beach.
*Didn't someone blog recently that marshmallows are low fat? Yippee!
*Grilled chicken, fish and sweet potatoes taste best when cooked on an open fire...trust me on this one

As far as cocktails go..... I can't offer any healthy options here - but if you stick to an active day and clean eating regimine - I say go ahead and have one - you deserve it!

I'd love to hear some more healthy eating ideas from you. Happy camping!"
