Cardio before or after weights? Cardio before or after weights?
Save Tip

I wasn't sure of this, so I looked it up and found the following:

Glycogen stores are stores of energy that your body uses during weight training and cardiovascular exercise. During weight training, glycogen stores are the only energy source used. Therefore, completing your cardiovascular routine before weight training will substantially deplete your energy (glycogen) stores needed to complete a proper weight training program. Also, completing your weight training before your cardiovascular program significantly decreases you glycogen stores. When you begin your cardiovascular training your body burns less glycogen and more of your stored fat. Therefore, to reach you optimal fat burning stages and to have the proper energy to utilize an exercise program, complete your weight training before your cardiovascular training!

davegleason It all depends on your goals. If muscle gain is the desire...cardio will slow down or hinder hypertrophy (muscle growth). A 10 minute hard interval training workout can be a great warm up for any strength training. In a practical sense it depends on what you want to excel at on that day. If you want to be strong and have energy for your strength training...do that first. If you want to crank on your cardio do that first. I actually love combining both. I wrote a blog on a workout with running quarter miles in between every set of pull up and dumbbell bench press to failure for four rounds. Great post and a great topic!

crista I like this question it comes up a lot w/ clients. However no research has conclusively proven weather cardio or strength training first is better or more beneficial. But like u said it depends what an individuals goals are, if ur focused on weight loss then excerpt your most energy on cardio and do it first and strength training second and than visa versea...that being said if your client doesn't know how to properly do weight training, i'd do weight first to teach proper technique..as not to injure them. Another option...do what you like least first that way you have something to look forward to.

OldeButGoode Weight training first if your goal is muscle mass or strength. If your goal is toning, etc. cardio first is Ok. I wrote a tip on this a month or so ago. Reinforcing the concept is good. Thanks !!

jillybean Yea I know what you mean. I actually tend to do my cardio before anything else as well. I like to get it out of the way right away. Maybe I'll try it your way and split the cardio to both before and after.
