3 Dollar Fitness You Can Jump Right Into 3 Dollar Fitness You Can Jump Right Into

What can be bought for around $3, and be used right away for fitness & sports training workouts? The Jump Rope!

Yes, jump ropes come in many shapes & sizes, but a typical nylon or rubber rope can be purchased for about $3 to $5 on average in most stores. If you have the room in your home, backyard, or at your gym, you can easily start jumping your way into better fitness levels.

I've often called the jump rope "The World's First Cross-Trainer", because of its ability to work for both sports performance conditioning and general fitness improvement.

Contrary to popular belief, you don't have to jump continuously for minutes on end, to get the benefits of jump roping. Simply apply the high intensity interval training methods to the basic jumping patterns of jump rope, and you can boost your heart rate, work on quickness, and also body control & rhythm. Let's face it: you can't get 'quick' or gain better body control on a non-weight bearing activity, such as using an elliptical trainer. (Plus, the jump rope is a LOT less spendy than an elliptical.)

Of course, there are some limitations with using a jump rope, mainly if you have knee issues and foot concerns. However, I feel even jumping for 5-15 seconds at a time at first can give you a good start to building into doing a full jump rope workout.

One of my favorites is to combine jump roping with kettlebell swings, alternating periods of time with each movement. Its an effective, time-saving workout that delivers quite the bang for your workout.

JimB Jumping rope is a great way to get in a quick workout wherever you are. I carry mine to work in my backpack and do jumps alternating with decline pushups during my lunch break. The October issue of Men's Fitness has a great suggestion: Do 30 jumps swinging the rope forward, then do 30 jumps swinging it backwards. Do four to eight sets depending on your endurance.
