That's one way to do it - might actually get some real hand-to-hand combat out of it too ;)

I've heard about Krav Maga from people on both sides of the fence - those that practice it seem to love it, though and what I like about it is that it's based on military hand-to-hand combat. You know that stuff is field tested and effective. Not sure about gun disarms, though. If the gun toter knows his gun as much as you know your disarm, then you are gonna lose that one.
As for Capoiera, I totally agree with you - in fact, I've seen a trained Capoiera fighter get completely schooled by a street brawler. Requires a lot of strength and balance to make it look good, though!

Personally, Im interested in Krav Maga and Wing-Chun (or Traditional JKD). Capoiera is neat and I'd love to learn it, but I don't know if it'd be very effective in a real street fight.

I used to have to tell the girl from Never Back Down when to go to makeup and when it was lunchtime and stuff.

Oh, yeah - relatively speaking Gracie was a small guy compared to most of his foes and he humbly dominated just about everyone. Really shined the spotlight on Brazilian jujitsu, especially the Gracie family.

Hey, the cool thing is you have boxing experience, so adding some jujitsu will make you a well-rounded force to be reckoned with. Your pics show that you have a solid core (probably also comes from intense abs training in boxing?); that will help as you will experience some insane conditioning. Good luck and make sure to blog about your progress!

After reading a few of your posts and noticing some MMA training spots around my area, I think I'm going to give it a try. I figure it will get me in sick shape and might be a cool change from boxing, which I'm more used to. Just gotta find some time so that I can really commit to it. I'm thinking ju jitsu because I remember joyce gracie destroying everyone in the REAL octagon when it first came out. For those who don't know, that was when there were no rounds and no weight classes.

Van Damme started with traditional shotokan karate and later trained in tae kwon do and muy thai. Beyond that, he did have a pretty good career in full-contack kickboxing before he started in the movies. If you could imagine yourself as a budding young "Van Damme" (e.g. high spinning & flying kicks) I'd suggest something with tae kwon do in it. Steven Segal practices aikido which is mainly a defensive grappling art - you won't need head-level kicks there! But you will learn about grabs, throws, pins, etc.

What did John Claude Van Damme do? I like his style of fighting. Steven Segal's looked the least physically demanding, but was effective as well. He just stood there and let the guy throw a punch and "reverse" it on him. Van Damme was way more fun to watch!
