Know Your Shoe Type Know Your Shoe Type
Save Tip

Recently a runner-friend of mine asked me, "Are you a neutral or stability runner?" I guess the clueless look on my face gave him the answer, "Duh?" He then told me to checkout http://www.roadrunnersports.com . Ok, this is *not* and endorsement of their site from a retail perspective. But, there is a handy utility you can use to help determine the right type of shoe for your body type and running style. It's called "Shoe Dog" - how clever, the shoe dog can fetch the right shoes for you... It's the little things in life, ya' know? Back to the tip now. If you follow the link to the shoe dog, you will be asked a short series of questions that determine the category of shoe that's right for you, then of course you are shown their catalog items that match the shoe type. I use the resulting list as a price/model comparison and start shopping around.

Once you know your shoe type, not only will you know what to look for, but you will also know what to stay away from (e.g. just because a shoe looks cool and is on sale doesn't mean we should buy it). We only have two feet, so it's worth it to get the best your budget will allow when it comes to running. One last tip (for now) is that last year's model might be just fine, so you can save some $$$ by shopping the closeouts.

What type of shoe is best for me, personally? Asics Gel-Cumulus. I'm sad that they don't make them anymore, so I'll try the Gel-Kayano next, I guess. Shoes are like a good mechanic: once you find one that works, you stick with it :)

plucky Ouch, that sounds painful... It's definitely worth it to invest in a good pair of running shoes!

Carina Thanks for this info, plucky! I've always had a different shoe for different activities (spinning, cross-training, etc....) but for running, it's more specific than that. Last year, I messed up both of my big toenails (they were 1/2 lifted from the nailbed and took a year to grow back properly. Ouch!) because my shoe was not wide enough and probably a 1/2-size too small!

runningbear Thanks for the info and for the reminder that prices doesn't necessarily correspond with quality!!

plucky I've seen a lot of hardcore runners with Mizunos, so they must be a good choice. Just this last weekend, I was shopping for a replacement to my beloved ASICS Gel-Cumulus 8's. I was looking at the Gel-Cumulus 9's and I saw another model on sale, the Gel-1120. As far as price, they were one step down, and usually that means the quality is also one step down. But I inspected them closely and they resembled the Cumulus 8's as far as the sole design and the location of the gel 'compartments'. After trying them on (they fit nicely), I decided what the heck. Yesterday I ran 7 miles in those shoes and they performed very well. Time will tell how they hold up, but for now I'm very satisfied and highly recommend the Gel-1120's.

runningbear A friend of mine just recommended this site to me this weekend. I was relieved to discover that I'm already running in a shoe that's perfect for me, though I was never fitted to them by a pro. GREAT site, excellent information. Thanks for the post!! BTW, I run in Mizunos, and I absolutely love them!
